An online pharmacy company known as Valisure, which is currently licensed to operate in 37 states, has issued an urgent warning to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about a cancer-causing chemical found in valsartan, a popular blood pressure pharmaceutical manufactured by Novartis and several other drug companies. As it turns out, valsartan contains high levels of dimethylformamide, or DMF, which the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies as a “probable human carcinogen” – just like glyphosate, the primary active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. For the safety of patients, Valisure is calling on the FDA to immediately recall valsartan…

Korean researchers investigated the anti-inflammatory potential of Xanthium strumarium, a plant extensively used in traditional Chinese medicine. Their findings were published in The American Journal of Chinese Medicine. Rough cocklebur (X. strumarium) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for many years to treat arthritis, bronchitis, and rhinitis. The researchers investigated the mechanism by which it ameliorates inflammatory diseases. To evaluate the therapeutic properties of methanol extracts of X. strumarium (Xs-ME), the researchers used lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine macrophage-like RAW264.7 cells and human monocyte-like U937 cells. They also used a LPS/D-galactosamine (GalN)-induced acute hepatitis mouse model. To find the target inflammatory pathway, the researchers used holistic immunoblotting analysis, reporter…

Research carried out by The University of Western Australia into the management of Aboriginal heart patients has found that while treatment is improving, more work is needed to ensure that rural patients are getting treatments that match those that are recommended. Researchers completed two audits that effectively serve as a report card on how one regional WA hospital managed treatment of heart attack and unstable angina (collectively referred to as acute coronary syndrome or ACS).  The study examined medical records from the hospital’s emergency department to analyse the differences in treatment and health outcomes and it also explicitly examined the…

INFOGEST Action training school: Applying standardised INFOGEST in vitro digestion protocol on different food matrices. Credit: COST What exactly happens as we digest food and what are the implications for our health? Answering these questions will help design healthier foods that could curb the rising rates of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. “The digestive process is something of a black box,” says Dr Didier Dupont, a senior scientist at INRA Agrocampus in France. “We need to know more about the role of food in human health and this means focusing on what happens in the gastrointestinal tract.”  To get a…

Pauline Hanson’s concern about the Australian Tax Office installing squat toilets to cater for its increasingly diverse workforce has prompted debate about the best way to go to the toilet: sitting or squatting. While nobody is claiming you climb up and plant your feet on a regular toilet seat, there is some evidence to suggest squatting makes it easier to empty your bowels. The flush toilet was first invented in the late 16th century by Sir John Harington. But it was only during the 19th century that seated toilets became available for mass use. Most of the Western world still…

Jungfrau A. Bietschhorn This region is a magnificent area with high mountain ranges, glaciers and is actually the most glaciated part of the European Alps. Visiting this area can be done relatively easy by car and if you want to go up, by train up to 3,400 metres above sea level, the highest train ride in Europe, the Jungfrau Railway is very impressive (and expensive!). The area is on the UNESCO World Heritage list because of its unique and wide range of flora and fauna and geological importance regarding the creating of the High Alps.
